This article is mainly about the Chinese president and the Cuban president met and greeted each other as good old friends. The Chinese president was delighted to see his old friend and know that he is in great health. President Hu said during the past half century, Castro led the heroic Cuban people in their fearless struggle to safeguard state sovereignty and adhere to the path of socialism, thus winning respect from people worldwide, including the Chinese people. They are well known to each other and Cuba was the first Latin America nation to join China, 48 years ago.
I believe this is a good start to see how countries are getting along to one another and have some things in common. This should occur between other countries that are interested to stop wars or meet one anther. China's and Cuba's relationship could become a good outcome to other countries.
I predict other countries will see this example and see what countries they can become good partners to work with. This should help UN see how countries could work with one another.

This article is about presidential terms in Russia. Russia has decided to lengthen the terms of their president. They have extended their four year term to six in order for their parliament to accomplish everything they hoped for. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin welcomes this news and is very eager.
I believe that this is good news not only for Russia, but for countries that have strong ties with Russia. There is trust amongst treaties and agreements and a new Prime Minister would mean reforming those ties. All countries who respect Prime Minister Putin should feel relieved because they will not have to gain the trust and respect of a new Prime Minister.
I predict that Russia will receive two more years of peace because they respect Prime Minister Putin and value his contributions to their country. Some countries might follow Russia's lead because it is a good idea for the preservation of intercontinental ties. Also I believe that this will do a lot of good to the world and bring more peace to Russia and their allies and comrades.

Summary: This article is about European countries who are trying to send out peacekeeping soldiers to Congo until more UN peacekeepers can go out and perform their missions. These countries are France, Belgium, and Sweden, and they are working together to send 3,100 troops to Congo. The teams, to help protect their soldiers, will probably be armed, but nothing is finalized yet, according to French Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert.
Analysis: I think that it is great that countries are willing to donate soldiers to help a struggling country, but I have to go and question their motives. Why would a country give up their soldiers for another country (even if that country is your colonization)? Also, the initiative of these countries is causing others to criticize the peacekeeping mission for not doing more to send their own soldiers and protect civilians.
Prediction: It is expected that this French-sponsored resolution will pass, and I also think it will. I think that France is just a little power-hungry, which is motivating the resolution, but all in all it will halp the peacekeeping mission drastically.

Summary: This article discusses how the U.S. has been using air strikes in Pakistan. On Wednesday, November 19 in Kabul, a suspected U.S. air strike occurred and killed fighters, and wounded several others. There has been an estimated 26 strikes in the Pakistan from the U.S. this year alone. Twenty of the air strikes have occurred only since August.
I am not sure why the U.S. is attacking so secretly and frequently. I do not understand this and I do not understand why we keep committing air strikes in Pakistan.
I think Pakistan will get very frustrated with the United States for frequently doing this. I think the war will get more intense, and Pakistan deserves some answers.

http://www.globalissues.org/article/758/global-food-crisis-2008#Risingfoodprices
Summary:The World Bank has said that global food prices rose 83% over the last three years and cites a 45% increase in their world food price during just the past nine months. As of March 2008average world wheat prices were 130% above their level a year earlier, soy prices were 87% higher, rice had escalated 74%, and maize was up 31%.
i think this will bring crisis to our world taking people out of jobs and raising prices. This will put many countiries in debt and malnutrition of people due to lack of money for food. Overall this problem will make poverty a common city of countries.
I think this will not be such a big issue in the UN until riots happen. Because the rising of food prices is normal and part of business in life.

In this article it talks about how Russian Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin vowed on November 20th to protect the increasing anxious country from having a return of economic chaos. Since the financial uncertainty has been occurring, it is extremely enforcing a lot of pressure on the government and Putin himself. This crisis deals with record breaking oil prices, which allowed him to preside over a period of growth and prosper due to the following issue. Russia’s government has been doing whatever they can to avoid a rube of devaluation. The prime minister suggested creating a financial center located in Russia and as well as growing the ruble into a regional currency. Putin offered many promises to pursue the monetary policy prudently, in order to maintain the national currency. Another would be fight inflation and fulfilling social obligations. According to Putin, their budget will be extremely low and some people are criticizing that he will be replaced as president. Communist party leader Gernardy Zyuganov feels that Putin has failed to help the real economy, and steering crisis which lead to difficulties and a financial sector they must face.
I feel that they should not just criticize Putin. They should give him a chance as a leader. I know him and the Russia government is doing their best in helping the economy issues. People should really listen in what he has to say and take it into consideration. Yes he has made many promises to his fellow country but that shows he really does care about the international issues. In addition I feel that Putin is doing a great job and people should not discourage him because their country is going through huge money issues.
I predict that Putin will try to make a really great effort and will try to fix all these issues. As a government, I know they will do anything they can to make their country look good. All they want as an economy is to overcome their issue and people will probably listen into what they decide.

This article was about how lot's of children are dying in Haiti, due to the cause of not having enough food for everyone. There are medical tents and doctors out there to help the children who are very sick and need medicine, but many have died. The children get very skinny and bony and die from malnutrition, some five year olds' weigh less then 20 pounds and need food. They are also in need of foods due to the soaring of food prices and storms that wipe and destroy their homes. There are many programs that have sent people to go out and help with this situation and the children who need this food.
I feel bad because these people are in need of food and can't do anything about not having enough food or money to support their family. Many families and children are struggling to stay alive and I feel grateful because we have clean water, food, and shelter.
I think this issue will be solved but it will need lots of help. I also predict that the deaths of the children is going to be helped although many are dying right now. I hope there will be a way to help these people soon, and stop the deaths of the innocent children.

summary- On October 28 an action was held in Namibia, South Africa in which 47 tons of ivory were sold to China and Japan. However, four of those tons were later withdrawn because they did not meet the international standards. What to do with these four tons is still undecided. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora feels that this is dangerous because the African elephent is an endangered species and so they might decide to sell the withdrawn ivory locally.
Analysis- i found this article to be very fascinating because most world articles that i find are about wars between countries but this one was about a war between man and animal. this article also made me sad because i think that humans have already done so much to hurt the enviroment that making another species go extinct would be a real tragidy.
Prediction- i predict that if something isnt done as far as supervising international trade in endangered species, that there will soon be no more African elephants. and this would be bad because the elimination of any animal from an enviroment causes major disruptions to the whole ecosystem.

The Somali pirates have struck again! This time, they have captured a Saudi tanker containing 319, 000 tons of oil, and are asking a ransom of $25 million to free the tanker. The entire world is ready to help the Saudi and stop the pirates, because the problem of pirates, or the “ scourge of hostage taking” according to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, is worldwide. The navies of countries like Russia and India are also participating in trying to solve this problem, but it is not just about the country of Saudi Arabia, but it is a worldwide issue.
I think that this is a terrible way to make a living, because hijacking other people’s things and getting money for them is not the right way to achieve anything. This problem is also one that must be solved soon in order to end the exploitation that the pirates are carrying out, by capturing the items that people need the most.
This current problem of the Saudi tanker will soon be solved, but the problem of the pirates will take longer. As long as there are people who do not wish to work hard for their money, there will be people who will come up with diabolical ideas to take people’s money.

Summary: After 27 years of Vanessa Iberri's death, Thomas Francis Edwards sits waiting on death row with three meals a day and a TV and DVD's while Vanessa lost 27 years of her life. She was murdered unexpectedly by Thomas. HE pulled up a dirt road and while Vanessa and her friend Kelly Cartier, who testified against him after a bullet grazed her head, turned the corner he yelled and when they turned around he shot them. He was convicted in 1983, however since the exececution chamber in California has been "on hold" due to constitutional and ethical objections on the lethal injection he has lived to be 65 and he still has more years to go due to appeals.
Analysis: It is said in the article that the leading cause of death on California's death row is old age. I wish that were the case for Vanessa, however this man had to come into her life and end it. Thomas made his choice, he even tried to kill both girls, now he has to be responsible for his actions. Life won't always be fair but now we have the opportunity to have equal treatment. He enjoys free board(from tax payers) while Vanessa's family fights an emotional struggle for justice. This should be an example for countries around the world because if people like Thomas aren't showed that their is a punishment for their actions then the number of deaths due to murder, I think, would drastically increase. Jail shouldn't be considered a "severe" punishment because it is a known fact that about 64% of released prisoners go back to jail within three years.
Prediction: We have to think about the security of the community and not only about the right of the convicted prisoner. They had their chance to exercise their right to make their own choices and now we as a country/state should have it too. Therefore, until we realize that people like Thomas are a threat to our community and that they shouldn't be provided with comfort, like TV and other entertainment, which they took from their victim then justice won't be served. As for Thomas, I think that like most others he will die of old age.

This article is about the UN warning Iran forging ahead with stockpiling enriched uranium. Iran is forging ahead with its nuclear programmer. The Iran is rapidly increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium. Iran is enriching uranium at such a pace that, by early next year, it could reach break-out capacity. This increases the difficulties for Mr. Obama; he has vowed to meet Iran’s leaders to a more general commitment. Obama faces a real dilemma.
I thought that this article was fascinating. It go to show that Obama can’t handle all of these problem fast. The UN is helping out with this whole problem. If Obama is getting frustrated at only one problem in our world, then he is exactly how I would have guessed. Obama has really good policy on what he is going to do in the world, but I don’t think that he might get around to do all of that.
I think this article will turn up as a huge problem if Obama and the UN doesn’t stop it now. If Iran gets all of that uranium and does something with it then we will be toast. But if Obama helps out and the UN, they could try to stop this before it gets huge.

I also believe that this is an enormous problem because if Iran were to get hold of more uranium, they can create more nuclear weapons and power. Iran is not allowed to continue with its nuclear programs and if they are doing this, they are violating the rules the UN has set for them. Great Job Heather! I love the topic of Nuclear Proliferation! :) :)

This article made me so sad! It is horrible that the nations of China and Japan have such a thirst for exotic goods. Since the African Elephant is going extinct, it is horrible that people would still obtain ivory from them. Hopefully on the near future the UN or some other NGOs will step in and fine countries that are recieving ivory. Great Job Ellen! I am really glad that you wrote about this issue because people need to know what is happening to a great and beautiful animal! Awesome Work! :) :)

Comment on Noel H- I agree with you, Pakistan does need answers and the US should have valid reasons for the air strikes but most likely they won't. I also agree that the war will increase in intensity and maybe the soldier retreat will be harder to take effect.
Comment on Ellen G- That is fascinating but we have to realize that these actions have existed since almost forever. We as humans have thought that we are superior so this "war" will exist until we start thinking otherwise. Moreover, it is sad that we are the cause for endangering elephants and just for our greed.

In this article, it talks about how a torrential rain in Brazil kills over 70 people. 137,000 homes have been without power, and more than 55,000 homes were displaced. Over the weekend, 15 people died due to landslides, and 13 people died trying to flee. More than 80% of Rio De Janeiro is underwater, and air force planes are airlifting supplies at the time.
My opinion on this topic is that nature is a force to be reckoned with. This should have been predicted so people could evacuate earlier, but nature is a force of it's own. Even man couldn't have stopped this horrible event.
My prediction on what will happen is that the homes will not be rebuilt. Many people will lose their homes, and the torrential rain might wipe out even more of Brazil. This could lead to massive poverty, because people will lose everything they have.
