Summary: Great Britan has decided that, because of the lack of progress, to pull out most of their soldiers from Iran. The mission of these soldiers has been very much hated by Britan, only strengthening the want to leave. Because Britan was the second biggest contributor to the Shiite and Sunni wars, The United States has decided to withdraw by 2010 as well. Iraqi officials were complaining about how much of the British were holding much of the military support, so almost no one is sad about the British's decision to leave.

Analysis: I honestly do not know what stance to take on this; on one hand it is perfectly sensible to take out your troops when the current situation is not improving, but also we cannot just leave someone elses county a complete mess and expect them to deal with our mistakes.

Prediction: I don't think that the situation could get any worse, but I don't think that it is going to get better with troops leaving. The Shiites and Sunnis will eventually solve their problems, but probably not in time to keep all thier people from dying.

India: Pakistan Must Sustain Resolve

Pakistan must stopped donating money to a terrorist group that is tied to the horrible attacks in Mumbai. However they will only do this if the United Nations requests this banning of donations. This article proves that Pakistan is involved with State Sponsored Terrorism. This article also says that India and Pakistan are "nuclear rivals". This may be one of the reasons those two countries suffer from enmity. India supports Pakistan's decision to close down militant camps.

I believe that the current problem of the Mumbai attacks will get better for India and Pakistan. However, the natural problems that have lasted for generations are not even close to being resolved. India will not forget the attacks so soon though. This can probably add to the number of problems that India and Pakistan have against each other. Pakistan will also continue to fund their terrorist groups if the United Nations does not step in. The UN must stop Pakistan from doing these terrible things.

I predict things will get better for India and Pakistan in a few years. Nothing big is going to happen in the next six months for these two rival countries. When India finally forgives Pakistan for the attacks in Mumbai, they will probably find some other topic to debate about. The controversies between India and Pakistan may never be resolved.

This article is about the recent turmol in Greece over the death of a 15 year old boy. The boy was killed in a riot by a deflected bullet shot by the police. Because of his death, many juveniles have been inspired to rebel against the police and more people were injured. Many things have been stolen from stores, including watches, jewelry, and more electronics. Also, other countries have seen protests that in support of the Greek rioters.

I predict that eventually things in Greece and Europe will calm down because the police and government will gain more control on the situation.

I believe that it was wrong for the police to become so antagonistic but also for the teenagers to become so rebellious. It said that the bullet in the boys body was deformed because it had bounced off a hard surface before hitting him in the chest, which means the police werent aiming for him, it just happened that the bullet deflected off another surface.

This article was about how President Bush said he was going to do something about the genocide happening in Darfur, but yet a year later people are still dying from genocide and there has been no change. They have sent only 10,000 of the promised 26,000 peacekeepers and they are wondering why it has taken so long for them to send help. Many people are dying from genocides and there is no help out there to stop it from happening.

I predict that eventually there will be help in Darfur, and I think genocide will never be stopped completely, but there are many ways they could prevent this from happening as much.

I believe that it was wrong for President Bush to say that he was going to do something about this and not keep his word or take as long as it is taking to keep his word. And soon there will be a way to help this from happening as much as it is.

The attacks on Mumbai have caused some Western officials to carefully watch against people such as the 10 gunmen from the attack last month. Al Qaeda websites are filled with militants urging more attacks. Lashkar-e-Taiba was the group accused for the attack and is disputing with India. The NYPD has sent 3 officers in Mumbai to better understand the attacks. Lashkar operates in english and even when people graduate from this group, they are always connected in an alumni network. Two Americans in Atlanta are awaiting trial becuase they sought to work under Lashkar.

I think that this is a very delicate subject because it arouses countries around the world and rises speculation. The world is kind of unsure who is responsible for the attacks and everyone is on alert. Countries are also discovering some supporters of these terrorist groups in their land. These attacks are causing the world to get involved.

I think that nations and countries will continue to be on utmost alert as to the people in their country/nation. I predict that countries will hold vigil to the situations in Mumbai and Pakistan. I believe it will take a while for the countries to work it out.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/dec/12/somalia-piracy-united-nations-resolution

The UN hosted a conference sponsored by them in terms of discussing piracy among Somalia; the following conference was hosted in Kenya. According to the article it clearly says that the US requested an international authorization for countries that pursue in Somali pirates in taking them down on land. At the following conference, they came up with a resolution upholding to permit states fighting piracy to take all necessary measures ashore in Somalia, as well as the airspace. From the UN Security Council it was prior for raids being required from Somalia’s fractured government. This was discussed and they also realized that many villages and towns in Somalia’s northern-eastern coast gave sanctuary and logical support of gangs affiliated withholding ships and hijacking them.

Obviously it is horrible to hijack and with held ships from countries that do not belong to yours. Coming from the UN it is a horrible issue among the international scale and needs to be resolved immediately! In having the Security Council take this issue into effect, I feel that it is great of them to help these countries and solve the issue.

I predict that the following issue will be resolved as soon as all resolutions are solved. Hopefully the hijackings in the ships are not occurring still.

This article is about Greek protesters broaden demands to focus on jobs. Students pelted police station with rocks saying that they are going to stay on the streets over the police killing of a teenager into a wider rebellion against economic hardship. Alexandros Grigoropoulos and 15 year old boy that was shot and killed by the police. The demonstrator has begun adopting opposition demands for more financial relief for low-income Greeks. The students seemed more relaxed. They are now trying to encourage nonviolent action in Greece.

I thought the article was really weird because these students are getting mad at the police for shooting and killing a boy. I understand about getting upset, but going over board. I do agree with what they are doing about trying to reduce violence in Greece.

I think that this article will turn to be nothing. I think that Greece will become a nonviolent country. This problem will be one to remember because if it dose happen, the students are the ones who got this whole thing going.

The Pakistanian government has accused Islamic clergy-man Cleric Hafiz Mohammad Saeed of planning the Mubai terrorist attack. Saeed's country wide offices were immediatly closed after his accusation. He quotes," We don't have any office [that] develops terrorists, do terrorist activities. I preach religion". Saeed was later put under house arrest by Palestinian police officers and will be under house arrest for three months.

I do believe that Mr. Saeed could be responsible of planning and supporting the Mumbai terrorist attacks. In my opinion, the Islamic preachers are so dedicated to their religion and their past empire, that they feel that they deserve to reclaim their former glory. What they are doing to support my theory is that they are making their children rehease war poems about the greatness of dying for a faith will earn them a rank in heaven and condemn people who are not in their religion to HELL.

I predict that the Pakistian government will let Saeed live a normal life after a three months house arrest. Then after a couple of weeks later, India would sue in some sort Saeed in a war court room.

I deeply congratulate Morial C. on a superb research topic. I am also on the same boat with her; I don't know if England is choosing a good choice or a bad choice. This article is about how Pakistan suspects US strike killed six people on the Pakistan side of the Afghanistan border. The US is suspected of carrying more than 30 missile strikes against militant targets on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border since August. Most missiles are said that they are launched from spy planes that take off from Afghanistan.

I believe that they should confirm what really happened instead of playing the blame game towards one another. They should figure out what were the strikes mainly going towards to.

I predict that US will settle this with Pakistan to know what really went on. Pakistan might be furious with US but can try to compromise to one another.

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200812112158DOWJONESDJONLINE001107_FORTUNE5.htm

Summary: This article is about how a judge is limiting the amount of money that they are going to spend on the World Trade Center that was destroyed in 2001. The only part they can recover is the "fair market value" out of four buildings that were destroyed. Someone has got 4 billion in insurance money however that isn't far enough money to replace all the destroyed buildings. A lawsuit has been seeking as much as 16.2 billion to replace the value of the four towers.

Analysis: I think that the buildings should be replaced. However at this time our economy is so low that this is the least of our problems and we can come back to this and worry about other things. This is something that needs to be fixed just not at this moment in time. Also if we wait then the amount need to replace everything might be granted.

Prediction: I predict that they are going to lose the lawsuit because it is the least of our problems at this moment in history. Also it is a lot of money that can't just come out of nowhere.

Summary: The level of corruption in Mexico is at all-time-highs. This is a known fact to all people, even Mexico’s president. Felipe Calderon has realized,“the government was making strides against corruption but warned that graft remained a threat to the nation's efforts against crime.” Moreover, he also knows that international crime networks will not bennefit him due to the lose of authority in the regions affected, but he has started a program called Operation Cleanup to help him. Operatio Cleanup has already had some effects, like the spate of arrests of corrupted officials.

Analysis: Felipe Calderon said that the Mexican government was one without secrets and with open doors. This transparency, especially over a critical issue like corruption in government agencies, should be used as an example for other countries. Letting others know about your problems can help you solve them because of the added support.

Prediction: Felipe Calderon can solve this problem because so far he has made wise choices for his country. I think he has the right plan, all he has to do is put it into action. It will take time but I think it will work to reduce, drastically, the corruption rates.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/12/12/africa/12iraq.php

In this article, a suicide bomber attacked a restaurant where Sunni Arabs and Kurds were meeting to ease tension in the North. At least 48 people were killed due to this bombing, and was done to provoke extremists. Almost 100 people were wounded in the bombing, and the restaurant was packed with as many as 3,000 people. Several women and children were seen dead.

My opinion on this conflict is that the suicide bombers should stop attempting to provoke extremists, and cause more war. I also think bombing their target was a bad idea, because the meeting of Kurdish officials and Sunni Arab members was an attempt to make peace, but this bombing only lead to more problems.

I predict that more suicide bombings will happen, until the war is ended there. More suicide bombings have been happening more recently, and by the emtreme matters of this conflict, it cannot be stopped.

Summary: this article is about nuclear weapons in North Korea. President Bush has been trying to get North Korea to denuclearize their country but had no success. Now the denuclearization isses will fall to President-elect Barack Obama. there was a session over the last four days held in Beijing and North korea agreed to the proposal by the U.S, China, Japan, South Korea, and Russia but did not want to sign it. this article also mentions about North Korea's growing foof crisrs and future. it also talks about Leader Kim Jong II's health. it is said that Leader Kim Jong II had a stroke this summer but the government denies it.

Analysis: i think that it is a little weird that North Korea agrees with the proposal about denuclearization but does not want to sign it. it seems i bit odd. it is alomost like they are hiding something but then it again it could just be me.

Prediction: i think that North Korea will keep refusing to sign anything because its been a while. Bush has been trying and had no success. maybe Obama can change their mind.

The climate has taken a very sudden turn in the past few years, and it has sadly been changed in a negative way. The United Nations (UN) has decided to create a two year process that would help to reach an agreement in Copenhagen by the year 2009. They are at the midway point at this time, but many of the delegates feel that the larger countries are not participating as much as they are able to, and they are not any closer to a solution. A decision has been reached about helping developing countries deal with problems that have been caused by climate changes. There is a separation, though, for the funding for these countries, but it will soon be solved by more countries that participate vigorously. A collaborated document is said to emerge in June of next year, and we will soon see the results of this two year method.

I think that this two year plan will definitely help the climate of the world. I am glad that there is action being taken about the changes in our climate. The larger countries should try to contribute more to this congregation, because they have more they can donate than the budding countries.

I am quite sure that this procession will help the problem of climate change, but I am not sure if it will diminish the problem entirely. I do hope that this will be a step in the direction of repairing the climate, and creating a better world.

(INCLUDES VIDEO!!!!!!)
In this press conference in Iraq, a Iraqi journalist throws shoes at George Bush. luckly he dodges them and the assailant gets beat up.

George bush made a lots of enemies in Iraq/Iran. many innocent people get hurt when we try to find terrorists. the Iraqi journalist can be two things-
1) he is victim of his family being killed because on sucspicion of being terrorists
2)He is the terrorist!!!!!!!

Luckily, George Bush knows how to dodge. If you look closely then you see that if he hadnt dodged then the shoe would have hit him excatly in the face. George bush was like
"OH Snap! gotta do the matrix"

People need to stop being extremists and hating political leaders for thier problems. George bush got "attacked" because of what he did in the Middle East. If he didnt do that then terrorists would roam around in the Middle East without care of being found.

This article is about Iran's current nuclear program and the UN's role in it. The power five (France, USA, Russia, China, and Britain) are to meet at Iran to discuss the issues. Obama's role in the problem is to pressure Iran to stop improving their nuclear weapons program. Also, Iran states that its nuclear energy program is for civil uses.

I think Iran is trying to increase their nuclear weapons program because they want more power than most countries. I think that the UN needs to discuss issues with Iran frequently.

I think that Iran will eventually get pressured by the Power 5 and by the UN, but I don't think that Iran will weaken their nuclear weapons program.

http://www.biologynews.net/archives 2008/11/16/new_bacteria_discovered_in_raw_milk.html

Summary
A lot of people in the world drink milk with their cereal and call that a normal day breakfast. As we all know, milk can spoil very fast and it when it does, it becomes very bitter and chunky. A way we thought could prevent this was by refrigerating the milk at all times and therefore keeping the milk from spoiling. But recent studies show that a new type of bacteria was found in raw milk and it can even spoil the milk though the milk is refrigerated. Now note the this only happens to raw milk and therefore any pasteurized milk is so far fine from this problem. This bacteria is called Chryseobacterium and it is found to have the ability to grow at extreme temperatures. These bacteria secrete an enzyme that causes the spoiling of milk. Many types of bacteria come from the teat of the cow, the udders, the milking equipment, ext. Due to this, there are now many debates about the health risks taken in drinking unpasteurized milk. And also because of this discovery, in some countries, the selling and consuming of raw milk was made illegal.

Analysis
I loved this article and find it amazing how stupid we humans really are. It has occurred to me that many people have drunken raw milk and yet they seem fine. Without the knowledge of this bacteria, I have noticed that people thought that the consumption of raw milk was fine and they did it anyways, but now that we find a new bacteria, everyone needs to freak out and make it illegal. Raw milk is not worse than it was before the discovery of chryseobacterium, it was the exact same milk that people were drinking before and therefore it really should make no difference now. If it were up to me, I would stop making these discoveries because all it is doing is creating a unneeded bad pandemics.

Prediction
I think that soon the entire world will put a ban on the drinking of raw milk and more investigations will be made in the discoveries of bacteria in milk.

this article takes place in somali and is about the fact that the president fired prime minister Nur Hassan Hussein. the president has angered many cavilions, not only for this but also for failing to stop pirates and islamist terrorists entering and leaving the country. in somalia, the publlic ellects both the president and the prime minister, and they public is angry the president underminded their authority.

"The president spoke over the last two days and he announced that there was no longer a prime minister. And he said that if the parliament approves the prime minister, then he would with it. But the parliamentarians voted for the prime minister, and they approved of the prime minister's job. But it looks like the president was a soldier, and he is still a soldier, so he thinks that he can dictate do whatever he wants… But this time the president is wrong," Ahmed noted." this quote from the article sums it all up- the president is wrong. he was elected, yes. but so was the prime minister, and the president cannot ignor his peoples dissicions because he does not like who was chosen. Kenya's government has recently gone through manychanges, and the past three or four years have been hard for them. the last thing they need is another war possesed president who does what he wants no matter what anyont else says. i am not saying that is what president Yusuf is like, only that kenyans need to start taking steps to make sure neither he, nor any other presidents, can act out of turn and without the approval of the citizens. the ability to trust those in charge of you is what makes a country work, and if those in charge and their subjects dont agree, it will result in a dictatorship or a revolt- neither of which are good.

I think the citizens of somali need to have another vote to decide who becomes prime minister, and that a law should be set in motion that the president cannot make an opinion regarding political officials without support from the citizens. this may be a hard thing to do, and it may just be a very amaricanized way of thinking, but it makes more sence this way- the people are happy and the president stays in office longer. if the govrnment could put aside threir personal dislikes and do what is best for the country, kenya can continue to come out of the terrible depression they were in very recently.

Current Event #8

For the first time in human history, the number of overweight people rivals the number of underweight people. While the world’s underfed population has declined slightly since 1980 to 1.1 billion, the number of overweight people has surged to 1.1 billion.

I think this is a problem that will always affect our coutnry. Because in a situation there will always be an expected on and a diffrent one. Although this brings health risks it also leads to medical discoveries.

As far as this goes politacaly I think to them this problem to them I think is seen as side dish and really a big issue gloabally to them.

http://www.globalissues.org/article/165/racism#RacisminAfrica

A lot of nations in Africa are in war or in civil war. There are conflicts with non-African nations and corporations. In Zimbabwe racism is increasing against white farmers from poverty and lack of African farmers. South Africa has recently been through segregation from Europe.

This is a big problem. Racism is a big deal. No one has the right to call you a racial name. Everyone in this world is the same. Just because their skin is different from yours doesn’t mean you can call them a racial name.

I think this problem will be resolved but its going to take a lot of work.

Summary: This article was about a series of suicide bombing that have killed 22 people in northern Somalia. The attacks included five car bombing targeting the capital of Somalia and truck bombs targeting the presidential palace, the Ethiopian Consulate and a United Nations compound. The Islamic insurgent group who is suspected of attacking is known as Shabab. They are known to have interlinks to the terrorist network and is showing that they are improving and have become an alarming problem due to their acquired power. Shabab has been fighting a war against the transitional government of Somalia and their leaders have promised to overthrow the government. Due to this reason the attempt, in the conference in Kenya, to finalize a peace deal with one Islamic sect is believed to be a failure.

Analysis: I don't understand why someone would take their life for this reason. The best solution would be to talk the problem out and if it doesn't work the first time then just keep persisting. Moreover, wouldn't it be easier to take action if they suspect the Shabab of killing the people. I don't understand why they don't, if they know that the Shabab has connections with terrorist networks that is sufficient evidence that they are a threat to the peace of the community.

Prediction: I also belive that the finalization of the peace treaty with one of the sects will fail because the war will continue. They cannot make peace with the enemy until they stop the fighting. I think that the best way to stop war is to retreat slowly. If the opposing military notices the retreat then they will notice that you are trying to stop the fighting and end the battle. The UN will not resolve the problem until they convince the people to stop the war and make a compromise with the Islamic insurgent groups and the government.

Summary: This article is about 1000s of Zimbabwe cholera death. The U.N. says more than 20,000 suspected cases of cholera reported in Zimbabwe. The epidemic has spread through Zimbabwe. The cholera spread threatens neighboring countries. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls the epidemic a symptom of profound crisis in the country.

Analysis: I thought that the article was very descriptive. It is really unfortunate that Zimbabwe had to face such a disease spread. In my opinion, the bordering states of Zimbabwe should keep watch for the epidemic.

Prediction: I think that if the bordering states aren’t careful, they will catch the epidemic and the same thing that happened to Zimbabwe will happen to the bordering states. Also, I think that many more deaths will occur in Zimbabwe.

Summary: This article is about South Korean lawmakers attempting to ratify a trade agreement with the US. However, oppositions to the government attacked this meeting, resulting in several violent outbreaks. The trade agreement was made after 10 months of negotiating, but it has not yet been ratified by either country's legilature. Officials say that outbreaks of attacks such as this are quite common in South Korea, a practice that needs to be changed.

Analysis: I believe that this public display of violence is intolerable. Instead of shrugging it off, I believe that the South Korean government should place their foot down and stop this nonsense.

Prediction: I believe that because of the wide publicity this event has been given and the overall demorilization of the South Korean government, I think they will furthermore make efforts to stomp out this problem.

Matthew - Interesting analysis and prediction. I agree with you that this problem should be solved and brought up immeadiately in the UN.

Patrick - I completely agree with you about Iran. I think the Big 5 are making a good choice to keep tabs on this nation.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601081&sid=a_sbtjboHu8A&refer=australia

Summary: The world's economy will contract next year for the first time in almost 50 years. Most industrial nations are getting wrecked by recession. The growth in emerging markets has almost cut in half. Banks have been hit by a "unholy trinity" of financial problems. An institute has more than 400 members in more than 70 countries that want to take steps to turn the economy around. The global economy will contract 0.4 percent in 2009, which is the first drop since 1960. The international monetary said that on November 6th the world economy would grow 1.1 percent next year.

Analysis: This is article is just talking about possible grow in the economy in the future. I think the economy is really bad right now and it is making a lot of people suffer by getting there house repossessed. It is a unfortunate situation however it is happening from the economy dropping.

Prediction: I think that the economy will get better. As everyone says that history repeats it self, it is repeating; and from looking back at that history we got through the depression and we can get through the economy dropping. It will take time, however i think that the economy will go back up.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/12/14/iran.acid.justice/

Summary: this article was about an iranian woman who was attacked by her stalker. he threw acid into her eyes, blinding and scaring her, both physically and physiologically. as punishment, he is to be subjected to the same torture. this gives new meaning to the phrase "an eye for an eye". this type of crime and punishment is common in the midle east. crimes such as these are often met with harsh consequences.

Analysis: i think that people only find this form of punishment strange and harsh because it is different from the way we do things here. when somthing is strange or different to us, it is almost immediatly viewed as harsh and cruel. this way of dealing with crime is actually most logical. yes, it may not be human and such, but it makes the most sense.

Prediction: i dont beleve anything will really come of this. while its an interesting story, it will soon pass from peoples minds. it is, however, interesting that this crime was committed on a woma and still recieved "justice". when a woman is raped for instance, in the middle east, it is common for her faimily to kill her as she is viewed as "unpure"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081218/ap_on_re_as/as_koreas_kim_plot;_ylt=AuZKi7Tyjqp1_x36HQOB2TwBxg8F

Summary : Thursday, North Korea accused South Korea of sending an agent to watch Kim Jong Il and planning to have his assinated. North Korea's allegations, however could not be verified and many experts say that, although NKorea and Skorea have carrid out such actions in the past, it is not likely for South korea to Send anyone. The article also says the North Korea denies that Kim was ever ill and on the contrary is active and healthy.

Analysis (your thoughts) = I think that it is very possible for south korea to have sent an assasin. After thinking that Kim was ill they may have felt it would be a smart thing to do because he could make horrible decisions.

Prediction - I think that Norh korea may see this as something they could hold against South korea possibly during negotions and it definetly does not help the growing rift between the two countries leaving almost no room for peace talks.

This article is about how Russia gave Lebanon ten fighter jets in an agreement to increase defense cooperation. the MiG29s are one of Russia's best fighter jets were included in Lebanese air force, which only has five Hawker Hunter jets and sixteen helicopters. This exchange was to strengthen the Russian influencein the Middle East to restore the lost with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

I believe this is good for the countries in the East because they can cooperate with one another. Since they are doing their selling of aircraft system to Iran despite American objections. This isn't so good because they are not listening to America.

I think that the UN will get involved and find a way to stop these exchanges between countries. America and Russia will soon talk and fix things about Iran and its jet planes.

The A.U.N. courts sentenced one former army colonel to life in prison on Thursday for masterminding a plan to slaughter 800,000 people in Rwanda. Theoneste Bagosara, the cabinet director in the Defence Ministry, age 67, is being charged to have committed genocide and crimes against humanity. He threatened to kill the head of the UN peacekeepers with a pistol during the genocide. After the genocide, Theoneste fled into Cameroon. In 1996, he was arrested there. His trial began in 2002 and lasted 5 years. He was found guilty with the killing of 10 Belgian peacekeepers and many more accusations.

I think that Theoneste is absolutely without a doubt guilty. There is so much evidence and honest people that testified against him. He was charged with soooo many crimes I could not have possibly listed them all!

I predict that he will receive the death sentence.

On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencia Batista and transformed the island into a communist country. Now, on January 1, 2009, Cuba celebrated 50 years of revolution. In February 2008, Fidel Castro was officially succeeded by his brother Raul Castro, and Cuban citizens hope that he will usher in reforms across the island.

In my opinion, the change from dictatorship to communism is a good one, and for the people of cuba it was a huge revolution. i am glad that cuba is improving because at least someone is the world is. This gives us hope that we all can change no matter our circumstances

my prediction is that Raul Castro will continue the prosperous cuban economy and the cuban population will celebrate 51 years in 2010

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/01/02/US_troop_deaths_in_Iraq_drop_in_2008/UPI-29651230934107/
In 2007 there were 904 USA troop casualties in Iraq and in 2008 that number............DECREASED by 95 percent!! in 2008 there we 314 deaths.

In my opinion 314 casualties is still a huge number of deaths, but compared to 904, it is a great improvement. At this rate, by next year there will be no casualties, and that would be huge!!

The outcome i believe will be positive for this situation. With a brand new president and a new year, i think that our world is headed for good future!!! I call it!!!! who wants to bet!!??!!??
